Admission in Animation Institute Tips
From a Student perspective.
- It is wise to join short term single courses on the basis of software. Even if individual software courses cost more than a big course package. The reason is a big course is packed up with too many things and at the end of it you may end up knowing all the software and not being expert in any of them.
- In animation industry if you have a goal to enter into a big company then you must have a specialization in a specific field and you must know anything and everything in that field. So choose you field wisely, create a show-reel and spend enough time to expertise your field.
- The latest advancement and industry practices can only be learn being a part of a real project. So be prepared with your showreel, expertise your specialization and if you get an internship program jump in right into it to get an on hand experience.
- Animation is a combination of a number of specialized field. just like any other field (doctor, engineering, law, accountancy) it is divided into huge list of specializations. These specialization are categorized in term of departments and software. A company may have a requirement of 3d motion graphic artist in a specific software among the listed 3ds max, maya, soft image, cinema 4d, houdini, blender. So in that case you must meet the company's requirement. Although if you know any one of the 3d software properly you can easily learn other 3d software with very less effort. the basic concept and fundamental structure of these 3d software are almost same.
- Best way to connect with animation community and resources are www.behance.net, www.cgsociety.org, www.cgarena.com, www.deviantart.com, www.vimeo.com
- You could be jack of all trade but only after dedicated practice. On an average a person take 4~5 year to become a CG journalist.
- In animation your work speaks. Generally certificates are not valued. So when you join a course check if your faculty have a good knowledge of the specific subject he/she about to teach. Don't hesitate to ask for his personal showreel and his student's works.
Here is a basic course pipeline i am suggesting but its totally upon you to make the decision
- Learn Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop (now you are already ready to earn as a freelance graphic designer)
- Learn Adobe Premier and Adobe After effects (now you have upgraded yourself to editing, composting and 2d motion graphics). the best part to learn adobe software is they have same basic tool set, menus, layout for all their software.
- learn any 3d package (3ds Max, Maya, Soft image, Cinema 4d, Houdini, Blender) and specialize in a specific 3d field (modeling, texturing, rigging, lighting, animation, rendering). also learn the specialized software related to that field. Like for modeling learn Modo or Zbrush. For lighting learn Mental ray, V-ray other render etc.
- learn Nuke, Fusion and other compositing software.
The best way to go is specialize in one field and start earning from it. Along with that pursue rest of the interest.
All the best and have a great career ahead!
